The Start of My Hairy Journey

I register this blog just to write about my hair journey. I used to blog for extra pocket money when I was in my early twenties and deleted my blog when I wanted a "life switch".

Being a vain person myself I do not enjoy sharing my hair loss concerns with my friends. Even if I do, they will barely believe until they witness my thinning crown. I have very thick looking hair because I cheated to make it look thick. How if you ask, I never had layered cutting for years.

I was born with thick hair. Adults used to compliment my thick hair, well-grown eyebrows, long eye lashes when I was kid. But my thick and wavy hair is giving me trouble when I started to learn how to wash my hair and put them nicely up to a ponytail. So I pull them with my comb whenever I comb my hair to reduce the volume. If time travel allows me to go back to meet my younger self, I would show my current thinning crown to her and threaten to break her hand if she ever does that to her hair again.

That is not the sole factor to be blamed for my thinning hair. Boys laughed at my bushy hair when I was in high school because my hair were not only thick, they were dry and wavy. Having pencil-straight hair was in trend and curly hair were perceived uncool during my high school days hence Rebonding technology was invented to save girls with curly and wavy hair like me. To be deemed as cool I started rebonding my hair on a twice-yearly basis despite having not enough money for meals until I learned a better way to style them when I started my modelling and blogging career in my early twenties.

The styling, bleaching and dying during my days as a freelance model have does no justice to my thinning hair. Luckily it wasn't long until I stopped but... damage was done!

What is happening today is perhaps karma of what I did in the past. I started notice thinning on the top of my head in my teenage when my parting becomes wider and more evident. I thought that could be improved by changing my parting and continued rebonding my hair. It got worst when I reach my twenties. And now in my late twenties, parting can no longer work because thinning happens on the top and sides of my head. Now, whenever I see people with hair half hanging straight at the bottom behind their head I have the urge to walk up to them and offer to trade my thinning hair with their curly thick hair.

"Oh dear, your hair is thinning at the top!"
"I could see your scalp and you are so young...."

I haven't reached my thirties and these are comments I am receiving quite frequently. Especially true when I am sitting and writing/reading.  I am standing at 1.68m so rarely anyone would notice my thinning crown if I don't lower my head.

I have tried several products in the past 2 years but nothing works as I wished. I tried Himalaya hair growth series, which I have not been using them diligently because of their texture and smell. Thus therefore unfair for me to comment on its effectiveness. I bought them for two years and they are still 90% as full as I first bought them.

Another one product I have been using for a year was Redken's Cerafill series.

I am using Redken Cerafill Retaliate (blue series) to wash and clean my scalp everyday. I apply the hair tonic on my scalp by parting them into around 8 parts everyday for the past one year. A hairstylist told me that my hair are dry because I use my scalp shampoo everyday but that is not the case. I have naturally dried hair which require treatment every single month. I only use the product on my scalp and then moisturise my scalp with moisturiser of the same series after shampooing. I love how well the moisturiser works with the shampoo, it leaves my scalp moisturised and fresh without feeling greasy. When I first started using their product I had a lot of dandruff because I couldn't afford the moisturiser. Separate hair shampoo was used on the body of my hair together with hair mask daily so I do not think that my dry hair was caused by the scalp products. Anyway my hair was born dry and having lustrous hair like those seen on shampoo ads are my wildest dream. Even till now.

I got a bit frustrated after using Redken in the first few months because I saw no difference except reduction in hair fall but I continued nonetheless because I have no better options. I do not believe hair grow products available in pharmacies because they could be too mild. Around one year later today, I saw many baby hair standing after I got my hair blow-dry. I was happy with the result but still, colleagues and friends are telling me that my hair is going bald. One day when I was writing on my desk my colleague snapped a picture of the top of my head only then I realise I must do something before I go bald in my thirties.

I first started online research on Ranjit Dermatologist because I have a friend who got his hair back after visiting Ranjit. Ranjit does not perform any treatment on his scalp but prescribe pills to him. These pills work miracles, he got his hair back within a few months! The top of his father's head was bald and I could see hairs growing after he visited Ranjit. Same goes to him, the bald part on his receding hairline has grown baby hairs. Besides his head he has hair all over his hands, fingers, even toes! He has now stopped the pills because he is afraid of its side effect, which is reduction in sex drive or impotency.

My thinning condition wasn't too serious so I've decided to reserve that option to the last. Throughout my research I found successful reviews on this Neeta's Herbal. Users have good comment about their treatments, but of course there are negative ones too, I have decided to give them a try since they are using herbal products and is not charging as unreasonably as chain like Svenson, Yunnam etc.

I made my appointment and visited Neeta's Herbal at Bangsar last Saturday. The place looks like a normal hair salon with chairs, mirror and two hair wash counter. I was consulted by Ms. Renu and consultation was very brief without using any devices. She ran thru my hair and told me that my hair pores could be blocked and regrowth are still possible. I was briefed on the treatment process and was told that results can be seen after the 6th treatment. It costs around RM3.5k for 14 sessions together with products. I asked for instalment plan and she introduced a package where a RM1.8k to be paid upfront and RM300 on subsequent visit until the RM3.5k was fully settled. I thought price charge are quite affordable as compare to Yunnam and Svenson which could easily cost thousands per treatment and with more bad reviews than good ones, I have agreed to pay the RM1.8k and started my first treatment.

One time treatment cost bout 1 hour 20 minutes using our own products. In my personal opinion products are not cheap as ingredients used are quite primitive but not as expensive as Redken and Kerastase. The therapist taught me how to use my product by demonstrating them during my first treatment and gave me a timetable on how frequently each product has to be used. During my treatment I observe most customers are men except me, young and old one, in the shop. There are a mixture of races but mostly indians. I noticed patches of baby hair growth in some men and this has given me some relief. Knowing that conditions differ among individual, I hope this could work well for me.

Ms Renu asked about my feeling after the first treatment and I could barely commented because it was just too early to anyone it is good or no good. While I was thinking how to answer I saw Ms Renu and her therapist were leaning forward from behind the consultation table with eagerness in their eyes for my answer. I quietly took a deep breathe and answered :" OK!". Then sat back at their position with relief and well... If you like to know my honest opinion, I was quite okay with the treatment except I am not very used to smell of the products. I checked with my family after going home and they didn't noticed any smell on me. I hope nobody would ever noticed.

To be continued.
